Penn State Law Online

Legal professionals trained outside the United States who want to practice law in the United States or who work with U.S. clients or multinational companies in their home countries need to understand the U.S. common law system, which differs significantly from civil law legal systems. The new Professional Certificate in U.S. Business and Constitutional Law, offered by Penn State Law and delivered online by the World Campus, is designed to prepare legal professionals around the world for understanding critical aspects of the U.S. legal system.

Introduction to Common Law Analysis and Language (LLMLW903) — 2 credits

This course covers the fundamental principles of U.S. common law, statutory analysis, and legal methods, with an emphasis on development of English communication skills for legal professionals. Students who successfully complete the course can gain:

  • experience in applying fundamental concepts of U.S. common law and legal analysis
  • experience in legal reading and writing in English and exposure to English legal vocabulary
  • experience in writing clearly and effectively in the law context
  • the ability to derive and apply rules from judicial opinions (cases)
  • the ability to speak with others about principles of the U.S. legal system

Students will not need to purchase a textbook or other materials for this course. All necessary content is available to the students online. It is essential that you have a headset for your computer that enables you to use a microphone/speaker.

U.S. Constitutional Law and Analysis (LLMLW906) — 3 credits

This course will examine the roles of the U.S. executive, legislative and judicial branches as well as individual and civil rights under the U.S. Constitution. It will also introduce LL.M.-level international students to analytical methods commonly used by U.S. lawyers with focus on U.S. Constitutional law.

Students who successfully complete this course can:

  • gain an understanding of substantive law in the area of constitutional law
  • learn how to approach common law analysis using United States Supreme Court case authority
  • hone language skills required for reading, writing and discussing legal cases and issues, with the assistance of an applied linguist specializing in legal English communication

Introduction to U.S. Business Associations and Commercial Law (LLMLW907) — 3 credits

This course examines common forms of U.S. business entities and the legal structure in which they operate. Students will be introduced to commercial law encountered in business, including sales, negotiable instruments, and secured transactions. Students analyze U.S. case law and statutes in the business context​.

Students will not need to purchase a textbook or other materials for this course. All necessary content is available to the students online. It is essential that you have a headset for your computer that enables you to use a microphone/speaker.

Format for the Courses

These courses are delivered online — there is no need for you to attend a residential component. Students spend 10 -15 hours per week on course work, on average.

Tuition and Fees

The program costs $675 per credit and there is a $129 annual technology fee. Textbooks and any other course materials must be purchased separately.
