Affirmative action education expert to discuss SCOTUS case

Dr. Liliana M. Garces, counsel of record for the amicus brief filed with the U.S. Supreme Court by the American Social Science Researchers in the affirmative action case Fisher v. University of Texas at Austin, will speak at University Park on Monday, October 1.

Dr. Garces will discuss the issues before the Court and how scientific research findings can inform these determinations. Scholars from 42 states and 172 universities signed onto the brief, which summarizes the social science evidence on the issues the Court is considering and argues that the University of Texas at Austin’s race-conscious admissions policy meets constitutional scrutiny. The case will be argued on October 10.

An assistant professor of higher education at George Washington University, Dr. Garces' research examines and informs policies that can assist educators and policymakers in addressing racial and ethnic inequities in K-12 and postsecondary education.

Her presentation will take place in the Garden Room of the Pasquerilla Center at noon and will be followed by a panel discussion with Penn State Law Professor Dr. Preston Green, who has a joint appointment with Penn State’s College of Education; Dr. John Cheslock, director for the Center for the Study of Higher Education at Penn State; and Dr. Leticia Oseguera, research associate in Center for the Study of Higher Education and assistant professor in higher education.

This presentation is co-sponsored by the Penn State Center for the Study of Higher Education, the Dean's Office of the Penn State College of Education, and College of Education Multicultural Student Services Office.
