Law School Announces New Faculty Appointments

David M. Hasen, a noted tax scholar and the 2008-09 Professor-in-Residence at the U.S. Internal Revenue Service, joins us from the University of Michigan Law School, where he is an Assistant Professor of Law. Professor Hasen’s scholarship and teaching focus on taxation, jurisprudence, administrative law, and contracts. His scholarly work has appeared in the Emory Law Journal, Texas Law Review, Yale Journal of Regulation, and Tax Law Review.  He has been a visiting professor at the University of Southern California School of Law, Hastings College of Law, and the University of Auckland, New Zealand. Prior to teaching, Professor Hasen clerked for Judge Maxine Chesney on the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California and worked as an associate in the tax departments of Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP, and Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati, P.C. Professor Hasen earned his doctorate in government from Harvard University and his law degree from Yale Law School, where he served as a notes editor of the Yale Law Journal.

 

David H. Kaye, widely recognized as the world’s preeminent legal expert on DNA evidence, other forms of scientific evidence, and on issues of statistics in law, joins us from Arizona State University’s Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law, where he was the Regents' Professor of Law and Professor of Life Sciences. Professor Kaye is the author of ten books, including The Double Helix and the Law of Evidence (Harvard University Press, forthcoming 2010), and more than 100 articles in journals of law, philosophy, psychology, medicine, genetics, and statistics. He has held teaching and research appointments at Cornell University, Duke University, the University of Virginia, Hopkins-Nanjing Center for Chinese and American Studies, Sichuan University, and other major research universities. Prior to teaching, he served as Assistant Special Prosecutor on the Watergate Special Prosecution Force, and as law clerk to Judge Alfred T. Goodwin of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Professor Kaye holds degrees in law from Yale Law School, in astronomy from Harvard University, and in physics from MIT.

 

Carla D. Pratt, a noted scholar of critical race theory, the role of law in constructing racial identity, and the role of race and racism in the legal profession, is rejoining our faculty after serving last year on the faculty of Texas Wesleyan University School of Law. Professor Pratt’s scholarly work appears in Wisconsin Law Review, Fordham Law Review, Florida State Law Review, Howard Law Journal, Washington & Lee Race Ethnic Ancestry Law Journal, and other major publications. Before moving to Texas, Professor Pratt served as one of the law school’s associate deans for academic affairs. Prior to entering law teaching, Professor Pratt served as a New Jersey Deputy Attorney General in the civil division and engaged in private practice as a commercial litigator with the law firm of Drinker, Biddle & Reath LLP in Philadelphia. She teaches Constitutional Law, Criminal Law, Race and American Law, Federal Indian Law and Professional Responsibility. Professor Pratt received her J.D. degree from Howard University School of Law where she served as technical editor of the Howard Law Journal. 

 

Marco Ventoruzzo is an acclaimed scholar of business law who will hold a joint appointment with our law school and with Bocconi University in Milan, Italy, where he is Director of the Corporate and Business Law Ph.D. Program and Vice Director of the Paolo Baffi Research Center on Central Banking and Financial Regulation. Since 2001, he has been a Special Legal Consultant to the Italian Stock Exchange (London Stock Exchange Group). Professor Ventoruzzo has published more than thirty articles in Italian, English, and French in several major U.S. and European publications, including the New York University Business Law Journal, the University of Pennsylvania Business Law Journal, the European Company and Financial Law Review, the Revue des sociétés and the Rivista delle società. He has taught and lectured at various law schools and universities in Europe, the United States, and Asia, including Oxford University (U.K.), Hamburg University (Germany), Fudan University (China), National Law School of Bangalore (India), LSU Law School (USA), Esade Law School (Spain), and several Italian universities. Professor Ventoruzzo earned his law degree from Università Statale di Milano, a master of laws degree from Yale Law School, and a doctorate of law from the University of Brescia.
