UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Second-year Penn State Law student Allison Wells has landed her own weekly sports column on the online sports news outlet Last Word On Sports. Wells freelances for Last Word specifically about the Penn State Nittany Lions Football Team.

The goal of Wells’ column is to break down the game, giving her opinion on the quality of game played and the strengths and needed improvements of the Nittany Lions. Her recent assessment of the Sept. 7 game versus Temple University was featured on the Last Word On Sports Facebook page and other social media outlets.

Even with a rigorous law school schedule, Wells manages to balance school work, covering football games, and reporting back to Last Word every week.

Wells has had a passion for sports since early on in life. She is a second degree black belt and a Junior Olympic Champion in karate. She also traveled with her family all over the country, as her brother played basketball in the Amateur Athletics Union, where Wells helped in scorekeeping.

“I started realizing, the older I got, that I wasn’t just a sports fan,” Wells said, “but that I actually had a working knowledge of the rules and the strategies that go into a successful team. I enjoy analyzing the players, the games, and the plays.”

In addition to her column, Wells is the president of the Sports and Entertainment Law Society at the law school, which aims to inform interested students of noteworthy advancements and litigation on hot-button issues across the spectrum of sports and entertainment. The organization also serves as a forum for students to debate and discuss these legal issues as they arise in the current, changing arena of sports.

Wells says that working for Last Word is a great experience to boost her writing skills, and to network and display her knowledge of sports to potential employers. In the near future, she hopes  to gain an internship in the sports industry to further her career. Her ultimate goal is to become general counsel for a professional sports team or the first female commissioner of the NFL or NBA.
