Summer spotlight: Follow three Penn State Law students as they complete their summer internships

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – This summer, Penn State Law students are working around the world, honing their skills and gaining valuable legal experience. Jeremiah Johnston, Donald Barclay, and Elizabeth Aaberg are three of the many students who will be making an impact this summer and bringing back what they learn to another successful year at law school in the fall.

Johnston is spending his summer months working in the Intellectual Property Group and Cyber Law Sector for Bird & Bird Law in Stockholm, Sweden.  His work there focuses on researching and writing internal documents that the firm intends to publish concerning copyrights, big data, IT law, and cybersecurity issues.  Additionally, Johnston is aiding attorneys in the firm with document review and analysis for European competition law, aviation law, and marketing agreements.

“I feel very lucky,” says Johnston, “that I have the opportunity to work for such a prestigious law firm, with such friendly and welcoming people, and in such an amazing country.”

Barclay is working at the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York. The focus of his work is on child exploitation and large prescription narcotics cases. Barclay spends much of his time in the courtroom, shadowing the prosecutor, and also works on indictments, sentencing letters, and other legal instruments typically used by a federal prosecutor.

Aaberg is stationed in Pittsburgh this summer working at the Allegheny County District Attorney’s Office, assisting the DA in various tasks and observing trials. “Watching the trials is very helpful, especially seeing everything I learned in my Evidence class put into practice,” she says. “I will also likely be questioning one or two of the witnesses during a trial this summer.”

To assist students in securing positions like these, the Penn State Law Career Services Office operates a comprehensive career program that includes resume review, mock interviews, job postings, networking events with Penn State alumni, and on-campus interviews with employers from around the country.
