Customized Concentrations

ACADEMICS AND CONCENTRATIONS

Penn State Law in University Park offers a one to two year (30 credits minimum) Master of Legal Studies (MLS) program. Full-time students will generally complete the program in 12 months, while part-time students have the flexibility to take courses over two years. Penn State Law also offers a 6-12 month (9 credits minimum) Certificate in Legal Studies (CLS) program.

All MLS and CLS students have the option of building their own concentration that allows for specialization in a field of choice. Additionally, Penn State Law offers two concentrations: (1) Energy Law and Regulation and (2) Information Security and Privacy Law.

Energy systems and the law that governs them are changing rapidly as new science and technology emerge and companies increasingly tackle the problem of climate change. Penn State Law and Penn State University are leaders in the field of energy, and the Energy Law and Regulation concentration will prepare students for careers in the field of energy around the country and world. Penn State Law has the top energy law scholars in the country, and the program will also include courses from leading practitioners with experience in many areas of energy law.

The Energy Law and Regulation concentration assists non-lawyers who need training in energy-related law and policy issues. The MLS in Energy Law and Regulation is a 30-credit hour (minimum) graduate degree that can be completed in a year full time or up to two years part time. The CLS in Energy Law and Regulation is a 9-credit hour (minimum) program that can be completed in 6 months full time and up to 12 months part time. The programs enhance the credentials and core skills of energy professionals, deepening their knowledge and skills in energy law. The programs are also designed to assist those planning to pursue a career in the fields of energy and natural resources.

Students enrolled in the MLS or CLS programs will gain practical legal knowledge that targets the type of training needed by non-lawyers. Skills gained may include the following: understanding how to work with energy attorneys and regulators, read and negotiate energy contracts, and analyze energy regulation. If you are employed part-time or full-time, the MLS and CLS programs give you the option of applying the skills immediately in your current position. If you are looking to launch a career as an energy professional, the programs will equip you with the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed.

Faculty: Students in the program are taught by a nationally recognized team of experts, comprised of Penn State Law faculty and practitioners who are leaders in the energy field.

Employers will increasingly value team members who can help them stay abreast of fast-moving developments in technology and law.

The Information Security and Privacy Law concentration assists non-lawyers who need training in law and policy matters relating to cybersecurity, data privacy, and data protection. The MLS in Information Security and Privacy Law is a 30-credit hour (minimum) graduate degree that can be completed in 12-18 months. The CLS in Information Security and Privacy Law is a 9-credit hour (minimum) program that can be completed in 6-12 months. The programs enhance the credentials and core skills of professionals, deepening their knowledge and skills of the intersection of information security, data privacy and data protection.

Students enrolled in the programs will gain practical legal knowledge that targets the type of training needed by non-lawyers. Skills gained may include the following: crafting reports on maximizing information security strategies or on data protection regulation compliance; understanding how to work with privacy attorneys and regulators; and how to better understand how to predict the impact of newly emerging tech regulations. If you are employed part-time or full-time, the MLS and CLS programs give you the option of applying the skills immediately in your current position. If you are looking to launch a career as a professional in information security and data privacy, the program will equip you with the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed.
