Please join us for the Penn State Law Service Day!

In an effort to get first-year students more involved in the Centre County community, the Office of Student Services, the Office of Admissions and Financial Aid, and the Student Bar Association will host Service Day prior to New Student Orientation at Penn State Law. The event is scheduled for Tuesday, August 17, and you are invited! Each student will meet at the Katz Building and from there carpool to their assigned volunteer organization.

Service Day opportunities have been secured at the following locations:

Think We, not Me – Community Food Growing Program (thinkwenotme.org)

Think We, not Me is a multi-farm community food growing program that provides fresh, locally grown vegetables and fruit as part of the effort to eliminate food insecurity within Centre County. Their mission is accomplished by expanding the amount and type of fruit and produce which is grown to better meet the needs and preferences of their distribution partners and clients. In addition to harvesting, volunteers will be planting approximately 1500 seedlings for a fall harvest. This will include lettuce, broccoli, and cauliflower.

Some of the sites will need field prep for winter, which will include pulling up mulching fabric and preparing the soil to plant a fall cover crop.

 

RE Farm Café | Farm to Plate Dining, CSA, Workshops, Events & More (refarmcafe.com)

RE Farm Cafe at Windswept is a multi-use facility hosting fine dining, picnics, weddings, and more on a working, organic-practice farm.  Farm produce will be abundant and field needs such as weeding and maintenance are ongoing.  Jobs include mulching paths, clearing brush, and more.  In the cafe, there are opportunities to assist with food preparation for large quantity preservation.  To learn more about RE Farm Cafe, visit their website refarmcafe.com or see their documentary REmarkable REinvention.

 

YMCA of Centre County – For Youth Development, Healthy Living and Social Responsibility

The YMCA of Centre County is a charitable, nonprofit organization that provides opportunities to all individuals and families in the community by putting high moral values and principles into practice through facilities, programs, services and activities that build healthy spirit, mind and body. The YMCA of Centre County’s Anti-Hunger Program heads into its 17th year distributing meals through the Summer Lunch Program – SFSP Feeding. The YMCA will be distributing meals via their Fresh Express Program and Large Food Distribution Program. Volunteers will have the opportunity to harvest fruits and vegetables, work within one of their many distribution facilities packing produce for distribution, or participating in warehouse cleanup.

 

Habitat for Humanity of Greater Centre County | (habitatgcc.org)

The Habitat for Humanity ReStore supports Habitat for Humanity of Greater Centre County by selling donated new and quality used home improvement items and materials to the public at deeply discounted prices. 100% of the profits go to Habitat of Greater Centre County to help them fulfill their mission of providing quality homes to working deserving local families. In addition to raising funds to support Habitat for Humanity of Greater Centre County's building program,  ReStore provide businesses and individuals an opportunity to repurpose items they no longer need, while also offering them a tax benefit for contributing to a qualified 501 (c) 3 organization. Volunteer opportunities include cleaning, sorting, and stocking merchandise, merchandise pricing, assisting customers with purchases, assisting donors with donations drop-offs,  and assisting the ReStore driver with donation pick-ups.

 

Strawberry Fields – community support services for children and adults with disabilities (sfionline.org)

Strawberry Fields, Inc. provides comprehensive services and supports for people with disabilities and their families. Offering a continuum of services, that enhance the lives of individuals and families with developmental delays, intellectual disabilities, and mental illness. Strawberry Fields supports these individuals through benefits coordination, advocacy, housing support, financial management, education and employment, interpersonal skills, and crisis prevention and intervention support, mental health, physical health, and nutritional education and maintenance. Volunteers will have the opportunity to dust, clean, vacuum, paint, cut brush, rake, and remove debris from the offices and homes of the families that Strawberry Fields supports.
