The Big data Revolution and its Impact on the Law

Penn State Law Review’s Annual Symposium will be held on Friday, March 22, from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at K&L Gates in Pittsburgh, PA. The event will be live-streamed at Penn State Law, University Park, starting at 9:00 a.m., 012 Classroom, Lower Level, Lewis Katz Building. Attendees will have the opportunity to receive up to 2.5 CLE Credits and 1 Ethics Credit FOR FREE. At the Symposium, scholars and practitioners will be discussing the impact of the Big Data Revolution on the area of law that they are an expert in. Anne Toomey McKenna (Penn State University, Dickinson Law – Carlisle, PA), along with her co-authors Jenni L. Evans (Penn State University, Institute of CyberScience – University Park, PA) and Amy C. Gaudion (Penn State University, Dickinson Law – Carlisle, PA), will be presenting a piece entitled “The Role of Satellites and Our Smart Devices: Data Surprises.” Anne Toomey McKenna will also be presenting on the ABA’s formal opinion regarding the ethical duties of law firms associated with cyberhacking. Additionally, we will hear from Max Helveston (DePaul University, College of Law – Chicago, IL) who will be presenting a piece entitled  “Consumer Data Protection Laws: The Solution for Concerns About Insurers’ Big Data Abuse?” and James Chen (Michigan State University, College of Law – East Lansing, MI) who will be presenting a piece entitled “Models for Predicting Business Bankruptcies and Their Application to Banking and to Financial Regulation.” Finally, we will hear from David Parker (K&L Gates – Raleigh, NC) who be presenting a piece entitled “Compromise and Barter: Examining Privacy and Informed Consent for Research in the Age of Big Data.”
