Visa Information

  • Students who are not residents or citizens of an EU country must apply for a study visa at the Italian consulate in their home country. Penn State Law students will typically seek a visa from the Italian consulate in Philadelphia.
     
  • If a Penn State Law exchange student is not a U.S. citizen, the visa process may be different and he/she should research the Italian visa application requirements applicable to their home country and nationality.
     
  • The International Student Desk at Bocconi will send an official acceptance letter directly to Penn State Law which is a document required for the visa process.
     
  • It is recommended that students ask for a multiple entry Schengen Visa if they are planning to visit other European countries of the Schengen area. 
     
  • Students must apply for and obtain visa prior to their arrival in Italy. The visa application process can take between 6-8 weeks from the time of the application appointment. However, students cannot apply for their visa more than 3 months prior to the program start date. For more detailed information on visa, please see here (especially “Settling in Milan”).
     
  • The procedure is subject to change, therefore, it is advisable to call the Italian Consulate or check the website for information before your appointment with the Italian Consulate. Additional information on how to obtain a visa can be obtained through Stephen G. Barnes.
     
  • Once in Italy, all international students will have to obtain a “Permesso di Soggiorno” (Residence Permit) in order to reside in Italy for more than 3 months.
