Law School launches $35 million campaign to benefit students

Penn State University, The Dickinson School of Law has announced a $35 million fundraising goal as part of the University’s capital campaign, For the Future: A Campaign for Penn State Students. In the largest fundraising effort in its 175-year existence, the Law School has secured nearly $25 million as it enters the public phase of the campaign, set to conclude in 2014.

To date, For the Future has raised more than $1 billion university-wide and is the largest campaign in University history. At a celebratory event held on April 23, President Graham Spanier announced that Penn State will aim to secure $2 billion by 2014 to ensure that the University can continue to offer an outstanding education to students from every economic background while benefiting the public through research and service.

A top priority of the Law School campaign is to ensure student access and opportunity through scholarship support. Scholarships provide recognition and financial assistance to outstanding students enrolled or planning to enroll at the Law School and are vital to our efforts to recruit top applicants. The additional key objectives of the campaign are:

  • building faculty strength and capacity through support for dedicated professors and scholars at every stage of their careers;
  • enriching the experiences of students beyond the classroom and preparing them for global leadership;
  • fostering discovery and creativity through interdisciplinary research initiatives; and
  • sustaining the tradition of overall quality for which The Dickinson School of Law is recognized.
The Law School has reached the $25 million mark through the generosity of its alumni and friends and is counting on the continued support of its alumni to meet its campaign goal.

“For those of us who have had the privilege of being lawyers, one of our responsibilities is to see that our profession continues to produce outstanding lawyers. The Dickinson School of Law has always done that,” said James. W Durham ‘65, chair of the Law School’s For the Future campaign efforts.

Durham encourages his fellow alumni to give back to the institution that “gave us an outstanding legal education” and “provided the basis for our life’s work.”

“We had the benefit of the investment of those who came before us and it is important that we pay a dividend on that investment by reinvesting in those who will follow us through our school,” said Durham.

“Our profession needs to have the best talent available, and The Dickinson School of Law of The Pennsylvania State University is producing high quality lawyers who will continue to make important contributions to society,” Durham added. “Our new, world-class facilities in Carlisle and University Park will contribute significantly to the education experience of today’s law students. We all need to reinvest some of our present and future financial resources in our law school.”
