Intellectual Property Clinic now accepting client applications

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State Law’s Intellectual Property Clinic is now accepting applications from potential clients who have a need for IP legal services. The application is available on the clinic’s website, and the clinic will begin reviewing applications immediately in preparation for the fall 2016 semester.

The Intellectual Property Clinic, directed by Professor from Practice Catherine Kurtz Gowen, was announced in the spring and will begin working on behalf of its first clients this fall. The clinic is designed to provide second- and third-year law students with practical experience in legal research, advocacy, client contact and counseling, and administrative and transactional practice.

Under Gowen’s supervision, clinic students provide pro bono legal services to individuals, startups, and small businesses with limited financial resources. The clinic will provide clients with a variety of legal services related to IP matters, including general IP counseling, patent searches and patentability advice and opinions, U.S. provisional and non-provisional patent application filings and prosecution, trademark and copyright  matters, and IP agreement and licensing matters. It will not handle contested matters or litigation.

Client applications will be reviewed based on availability of resources, educational value for the clinic’s students, absence of conflicts of interest, and financial need of the client. As a student-driven legal clinic, the clinic has limited capacity and the process for choosing clients will be selective.
