Kaye to speak at National Institute of Standards and Technology conference

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has invited David H. Kaye, Distinguished Professor of Law and associate dean for research at Penn State Law, to speak at its International Biometric Performance Testing Conference 2016 on May 5 in Gaithersburg, Maryland.

Kaye will help open a technical colloquium on Quantifying the Weight of Forensic Evidence by describing legal, statistical, and forensic science conceptions of the “weight of evidence."

Recognizing that “issues related to statistical methods for quantifying the weight of evidence, and their introduction into courts of law, are of great interest and importance in forensic science,” NIST has organized this colloquium “to facilitate a technical discussion about theories and current approaches and practices for assigning the weight of evidence.”

A leading expert on scientific evidence and statistics in law, Kaye has been involved in many of NIST’s initiatives to strengthen the practice of forensic science, including NIST’s Organization of Scientific Area Committees on Forensic Sciences and its Expert Working Groups on latent fingerprint analysis, handwriting examination, and the communication of qualitative and quantitative findings in forensic science.

NIST, part of the U.S. Department of Commerce, is a federal agency whose mission is to promote U.S. innovation and industrial competitiveness by advancing measurement science, standards, and technology.
