Penn State Law student wins P.E.O. Scholarship

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Sarah Holman Loy, a rising third-year student at Penn State Law, is one of 100 doctoral students nationwide selected to receive a $15,000 Scholar Award from the P.E.O. Sisterhood, an international women’s organization.  She was sponsored by Chapter T of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and was nominated for the award by Penn State Law Associate Dean of Academic Affairs and Professor of Law Victor Romero. The funds will be used for necessary expenses incurred while in the final stages of her work toward her juris doctor degree in the 2017-2018 academic year.

Loy is the daughter of Ted and Robin Loy of Millerstown, Pennsylvania. She is a 2015 graduate of Colgate University, where she majored in peace and conflict studies and religion. She received her bachelor of arts degree, summa cum laude, and was the recipient of the Dag Hammarskjold Prize in Peace Studies, among other honors.

“I am very honored to receive a P.E.O. Scholar Award,” said Loy. “The women I met from Chapter T are compassionate, intelligent women who truly care about advancing women’s educational opportunities, and I am so pleased to be connected to this inspiring organization.”

The P.E.O. Scholar Awards were established in 1991 to provide substantial merit-based awards for women of the United States and Canada who are pursuing a doctoral level degree at an accredited college or university.

The P.E.O. Sisterhood, founded in 1869 at Iowa Wesleyan College, is a philanthropic educational organization interested in bringing increased opportunities for higher education to women. There are approximately 6,000 local chapters in the United States and Canada with nearly a quarter of a million active members.
