UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – On Monday, August 15, Penn State Law faculty, administrators, and current students welcomed the 154-member Penn State Law class of 2019 to the University Park campus. This group represents one of the largest classes at Penn State Law in recent years, and one of the best-scoring LSAT classes in recent history.

The class of 2019 features undergraduates with diverse degrees, interests, and life experiences. Members of the class have interned with congressional representatives, have volunteered on political campaigns, interned in a variety of legal offices, and have taken part in prestigious internship programs at Disney and Facebook. Several hold master’s degrees in various disciplines, and have studied abroad in places like China, Denmark, Egypt, Georgia, and Ireland.

The class of 2019, by the numbers:

  • Over 100 colleges and universities are represented, including Brandeis, Cornell, McGill, William & Mary, Williams, and Yale, plus more than 20 state universities.
  • Ten percent hold degrees from Penn State.
  • Students hail from 36 states and four countries, including large groups from California, Florida, New York, and Texas.
  • Thirty-eight different undergraduate majors are represented, with political science being the most popular, and others including anthropology, education, and zoology.
  • Thirty-nine are first-generation college students.
  • Almost 20 percent identify as members of an ethnic minority group.
  • Twenty-six students have expressed interest in joining the LGBTQA student advocacy and education organization.
  • Seven members have served in the military, one of whom holds a purple heart, and several of whom have been deployed.
  • Three students competed in NCAA Division I sports.
  • Three students earned the Eagle Scout designation.

But the class of 2019 goes beyond statistics. It includes a college record-holder in swimming, a winner of a college “Outstanding Undergraduate” award, a number of parents, a violinist, a published scientist, and a musician in a New Orleans jazz band. The class includes students who have immigrated to the United States from Bangladesh, Cuba, India, Jamaica, South Korea, and Switzerland. Among the students with prior careers are former and current business owners, law enforcement professionals, EMTs, and teachers.

“We’re extremely proud of this class, and that so many excellent students chose Penn State Law,” said Amanda DiPolvere, assistant dean of admissions and financial aid. “This group has some of the best credentials in the history of the law school, as well as an array of diverse backgrounds and experiences that will set them on a path of success in law school and their careers.”
