Penn State-McGill summer law program gains CIArb recognition

Penn State Law has been granted "Recognised Course Provider" (RCP) status by the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) for its Summer Program in Arbitration Law (2009-2012). Graduates of the program may be exempted from the CIArb introductory course and become associate members of the Institute.

Founded in 1915, the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators is a London-based organization with more than 12,000 members worldwide. According to its website, the organization "exists for the global promotion, facilitation and development of all forms of private dispute resolution to maximise the contribution that dispute resolution practitioners make."

Thomas Carbonneau, the Samuel P. Orlando Distinguished Professor of Law and founder and director of Penn State's Summer Program in Arbitration, commented, "Gaining the CIArb status underscores not only the growing importance of arbitration in U.S. and transborder law, but also the seriousness and depth of Penn State Law's commitment to education and training in this vital area."

More than 350 students have studied with the program since its inception at McGill in 1994. Courses offered include Investment Arbitration, Consumer Arbitration, as well as ICSID and ICC Arbitration.
