Max Planck Society appoints Professor Ventoruzzo director of new law instituteProfessor Marco Ventoruzzo has been appointed director of the new Max Planck Institute for Procedural and Regulatory Law in Luxembourg. The institute is a joint venture of the Max Planck Society, one of the most prestigious research organizations in the world, and the government of Luxembourg which is investing in growing its research and educational competencies.

Penn State Law saddened by death of Jack Keeney '49The Law School is saddened to announce the death of John C. “Jack” Keeney ’49, who passed away on Saturday, November 19, 2011, at his home in Kensington, Maryland. With the passing of Mr. Keeney, the Law School has lost one of its oldest alumni and most revered public servants in U.S. history.

Branches of government need to work together to maintain effective judiciaryU.S. District Court Judge John E. Jones ’80 called on Penn State Law students to better understand the issues surrounding adequate funding for courts during “Justice Unfunded—Justice Undone?” a panel discussion held at Lewis Katz Hall on November 10. “We’re fortunate that some of the things that have happened elsewhere in the nation have not happened in Pennsylvania yet .... Law students ... are leaders of tomorrow and you need to understand that this is not going to get easier,” he said.

Law School mourns the death of Assistant Dean for Administration Nancy J. LaMontThe Law School is saddened to announce the death Nancy J. LaMont ’78, the Law School’s Assistant Dean for Administration and a former member of the Law School’s Board of Trustees. Surrounded by family and friends, Dean LaMont died on Saturday, October 29 at the age of 57.

Judge Bufford appointed delegate to UNCITRAL’s Working Group on Insolvency LawJudge Samuel Bufford has been appointed as a delegate Working Group V (Insolvency Law) of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL), an arm of the United Nations. During UNCITRAL’s annual meeting in Vienna, Austria, from October 31 to November 4, 2011, Professor Bufford will represent the International Insolvency Institute, a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing and promoting insolvency as a respected discipline in the international field.
