ABA President-elect reappoints Professor Shoba Sivaprasad Wadhia to Commission on Immigration

Immigrants’ rights advocate and law professor Shoba Sivaprasad Wadhia will serve a second year on the ABA Commission on Immigration, an association that works to ensure fair treatment and full due process rights for immigrants and refugees within the United States. Professor Wadhia is a key voice in the debate about post-9/11 immigration policy and directs the Center for Immigrants’ Rights.

“Millions of people are affected by immigration law and policy, and the ABA Commission plays an important role in addressing the impediments immigrants face in a system where many are detained in correctional facilities, denied legal assistance, and/or deported without a fair day in court," she said. Guided by resolutions adopted by the ABA House of Delegates, the Commission works to coordinate and strengthen the ABA’s response to legal developments and to address the needs of immigrants and newcomers.

Professor Wadhia researches the role of prosecutorial discretion in immigration law; the association between detention, removal and due process; and the intersection between immigration, national security, and race. Professor Wadhia's teaches or has taught asylum and refugee law, immigration law, and a clinical course on immigration law and policy. In addition to directing the Center for Immigrants’ Rights, Professor Wadhia is organizing “The 9/11 Effect and Its Legacy on U.S. Immigration Law” on September 16.
