ABA appoints Professor Wadhia to Immigration Commission

Shoba Sivaprasad Wadhia, clinical professor and director of Penn State's Center for Immigrants' Rights, has been named by the American Bar Association (ABA) to its Commission on Immigration. The 13-member commission was established in August 2002 and directs the ABA’s efforts to ensure fair treatment and full due process rights for immigrants and refugees within the United States.

The Commission assists with the ABA’s response to legal issues that impact immigrants and newcomers including due process violations, access to counsel for individuals facing removal, and the growth of correctional facilities used to confine noncitizens.

"One of the primary roles of the Commission," said Wadhia, "is to advocate for statutory and regulatory changes in the law. This dovetails nicely with skills students learn at the Center for Immigrants’ Rights and the policy work they have conducted for client organizations."

Professor Wadhia also noted that the ABA's recent groundbreaking report, Reforming the Immigration System: Proposals to Promote Independence, Fairness, Efficiency, and Professionalism in the Adjudication of Removal Cases, was featured at Penn State Law’s Spring 2010 Symposium on Immigration Adjudications.

Other Commission responsibilities include: providing continuing education and information about trends, court decisions and developments for members of the legal community, judges, affected individuals and the public; and for working with pro bono programs that encourage volunteer lawyers to provide legal representation for individuals in immigration proceedings, with a special emphasis on the needs of the most vulnerable immigrant and refugee populations.
