Penn State Law Graduate Language Center

The Penn State Law Graduate Language Center, located in 308 Katz Building, offers a variety of services to help LL.M. and S.J.D. students become stronger writers and speakers.

The Center offers

  • Individual conferences for LL.M. or S.J.D. students to discuss a memorandum, brief, seminar paper, independent study paper, S.J.D. candidacy paper draft, or S.J.D. dissertation draft. The conference takes place with either a language tutor or a legal tutor.
  • Physical and online libraries with resources related to writing and oral advocacy in the American legal system
  • The Legal Partners in Conversation Program, which provides LL.M. students with an informal way to practice conversational English with J.D. students
  • Four scholarly writing workshops for all Penn State Law students each semester

How to Get Help

LL.M. and S.J.D. students may schedule a session online. Faculty members may refer students to the Center. All students at Penn State Law in any program may sign up for a writing workshop.

The Role of the Tutor

Tutors provide oral feedback and general guidance about the writing process but do not edit, proofread, or cite papers. Tutors do not not provide feedback or advice about substantive areas of law and content; students should direct any questions about substantive law to their doctrinal professors.
