The Penn State Law Yearbook on Arbitration and Mediation’s 2017 Symposium, entitled “Controversies in Arbitration,” features arbitration scholars and practitioners and their assessments of current drawbacks in the arbitration process. The panel discussions address three important themes: (1) the reception of arbitration in different legal traditions and systems; (2) the role of arbitration in consumer transactions; (3) contemporary criticisms and misgivings of arbitration. Professor Tong Zhiwei, one of China's most well-known public intellectuals and a professor at the East China University of Political Science and Law in Shanghai, visited the School of International Affairs to discuss China-Constitution-Politics. The event examined issues of Chinese constitutional law and politics and considered the current movement of government and popular sentiment.

The Possibility & Contours of State Multiplicity

The School of International Affairs and the Coalition for Peace and Ethics hosted a presentation and roundtable "The Possibilities and Contours of State Multiplicity: Preliminary Findings."  The event featured Jan-Hendril Passoth (Technische Universität Berlin), Nicholas Rowland (Penn State University) presenting their latest research work on state theory, and Larry Catá Backer (Penn State) as discussant.     

ADR as Public Policy

This year's annual Yearbook on Arbitration Symposium featured top Alternative Dispute Resolution scholars who covered arbitration and mediation influence on and interaction with public policy. The event featured a morning panel focused on arbitration and an afternoon panel covering mediation.
