Academics, Curriculum and Credit Information

Academic Program

A complete description of the academic program at UCT’s Faculty of Law is available in UCT’s Law Faculty Handbook. This is a 193-page document, which is available here [select Law (2014)]. American J.D. are considered “postgraduate students” for UCT purposes. (See pages 124–175 of the UCT Handbook for an overview of the LL.M. Programmes and Courses; pages 176-179 for Exchange Student Guidelines).

You are limited to two “LL.M.”/post-graduate courses per semester. Please consult with the study abroad advisor prior to enrolling. Please note: an “S” at the end of a course number designates a second semester course (July to December) and an “F” designates a first semester course (February to June).

Semester

Please note an "S" at the end of a course number designates a second-semester course (July to December) and an "F" designates a first-semester course (February to June). UCT’s Faculty of Law operates on a semester system with the first semester running from mid-February to June and the second semester running from mid-July until mid-December. Our exchange will be either in the first or second semester.

Please see academic calendars and schedule details here. An orientation program for international students will take place prior to the start of classes. As part of the orientation program, students will register for classes.

Credit

Students must enroll in two LL.M. courses at UCT, which is a full course load. Each LL.M./post-graduate level course requires a significant paper plus exams.
