Law School remembers long-time professor and World War II hero Edward Haughney

Professor Edward Haughney, 94, who taught at the Law School for more than 30 years, died on Sunday, January 1, 2012. His life was devoted to service—first, in the U.S. Army JAG Corps, and then to future members of the bar. Professor Haughney taught classes in military law, civil procedure, federal practice, and agency law and retired from the Law School in 2005. Law School remembers long-time professor and World War II hero Edward Haughney.

“We mourn the passing of our colleague and friend, but we also celebrate Professor Haughney’s incredible service to the United States and to generations of Dickinson School of Law students,” said Dean Philip McConnaughay.

Most of Professor Haughney’s military service was spent as a JAG lawyer in the U.S. Army. As World War II was winding down, he helped Weimar, Germany, transition away from Nazi governance, briefly serving as mayor of Weimar. Colonel Haughney served as court-martial prosecutor; chief of the International Affairs Branch of the Judge Advocate Division in Heidelberg, Germany; chief of the International Affairs Division of the Office of Judge Advocate General in Washington, DC; staff judge advocate of the Military Assistance Command in Vietnam; and legal advisor of the U.S. European Command in Stuttgart, Germany. Colonel Haughney earned a Bronze Star for Valor, two Legion of Merit medals, and three Army Commendation medals. Professor Haughney joined the faculty of the Dickinson School of Law following his retirement from the Army.

Professor Haughney was a graduate of George Washington University, St. John’s University School of Law, and Brooklyn College.

Following his retirement from the Law School, Professor Haughney visited the Law School frequently to catch up with colleagues and attend events pertaining to international affairs and military law.
