McKenna to address university deans and administrators on student online speech, university liability, and technology policies

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Adjunct Professor of Law Anne McKenna will address deans of student of affairs, deans of conduct, and other faculty and administrators from public and private colleges and universities regarding student online speech, social media, technology, and university liability at a gathering of the East Division of the Association for Student Conduct Administration (ASCA) on Jan. 20 at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.

Her talk is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. in The Hutzler Reading Room, 3101 Wyman Park Drive.

McKenna will discuss student online speech (both off campus and on) and how universities must walk the line between the First Amendment and university codes of conduct, technology acceptable use policies, and legal liability.

Complete details are available on the ASCA website.

The ASCA is a national organization whose mission is to support higher education professionals by providing education materials and resources, intentional professional development opportunities, and a network of colleagues to facilitate best practices of student conduct administration and conflict resolution on college and university campuses.

McKenna is a partner at the law firm of Silverman/Thompson/Slutkin/White (STSW), where she chairs STSW’s Cyber Law Group, SilverMcKenna. She is a nationally recognized attorney and author in cyber law, privacy law, and cellular law with over two decades of experience representing businesses, individuals, and educational clients in every aspect of electronic surveillance, Internet, computer, cellular, online content, data practices, and privacy issues.

At Penn State Law, McKenna teaches Information Privacy Law. The course explores information privacy and security issues arising from technological change and resulting shifts in societal perceptions of individual privacy, including how private and government actors electronically gather data, what type of data is gathered (personally identifiable information, biometric data, geolocation data, intimate personal details), and how such data is compiled, shared, bought, and sold across private industry data platforms and government electronic databases.
